Drawing

Credits:3
Length:8 weeks
Cost:$25 + $400
Next start date: Jun. 16, 2026 (8 weeks)

Overview

Drawing as Seeing and Thinking is comprised of lectures, artist videos, and demonstration videos. In addition, students will engage in activities that include visual analysis, creative problem solving, observational and experimental drawing, as well as maintaining a visual sketchbook journal. Students are encouraged to work with a diverse range of materials and processes on their journey to using drawing as a primary means of generating thought and creating images.

What you’ll learn

  • Develop an understanding of drawing as a primary means of generating ideas and visually articulating thought
  • Recognize the role of drawing across disciplines, including visual arts, applied arts, sciences and humanities, as a tool for inquiry, communication, and problem-solving
  • Cultivate visual awareness and perception by guiding students to see more attentively and interpret visual information with clarity, intention, and curiosity
  • Prioritize experimentation, iteration, and reflective sketchbook practices that build resilience, confidence, and openness rather than fear of "getting it right"
  • Examine the language of drawing through analysis and synthesis of the elements of art and principles of design
  • Explore accessible and unconventional materials and processes to expand students' understanding of what drawing can be
  • Develop an appreciation of the historical and contemporary role of drawing as a primary art form
